The marriage license...the single most important thing that needs to be taken care of on your big day, is often times overlooked. If you think about it, the tear jerking vows and costly reception mean nothing, if for some reason, the officiant or bride/groom let the marriage license slip their mind! A newlywed's worst nightmare! After all that, not being legally married! I worked a wedding this weekend where the bride and groom had a close friend ordained, so that he could perform the ceremony for them. He had no clue on what to do with the marriage license when I asked him if he took care of it. It's so important that whoever you choose as an officiant is well versed with the marriage license laws and duties. It's the officiant's responsibility to make sure the bride, groom, and witnesses sign it on the wedding day, and mail it out, so that you can receive your official license and marriage certificate!
Question: When during your wedding do you sign the marriage license?
There are a couple options when it comes to that. The most popular time to sign it is usually during the cocktail reception, directly after the ceremony. Make sure to let your photographer know that you'll be doing it directly after the ceremony, so that moment's captured as well! Some couples choose to make the signing part of the ceremony, after the first kiss, to make everything official in front of their guests. Fill everything else out before hand, so that the signatures are all you need! Jewish couples usually sign before the ceremony, according to their traditions.
****Make sure to also ask for at least 2 copies of your marriage license. If the bride decides to change her last name, an original copy of the license is needed to obtain a new social security card, passport, and other legal documents.
